Flowerboy

Inspired by Tyler the Creator’s Flower Boy album, Avnet created Flowerboy, 2018, an 18 in. x 24 in. mixed media piece on canvas. Music has always been influential in Avnet’s practice, whether it be the dissection of lyrics that resonate with her, the songs that help her get through a daily commute, or the music that makes her feel empowered while creating. The portrait is soft pastel on paper, cut out onto the acrylic paint background. The expression on his face, combined with the simplicity of the flower pot and joyful flowers, feels tongue in cheek- especially with the explicit language on the baseball cap. The background represents a brick wall, spray painted on the sides in a yellow hue. Street art was very influential for Avnet during 2018-2019, inspiring her to make work that she could visualize being on a building in New York City.
