Calf Study (2026) is a 5 x 7 in. color study for a larger painting in the works. The primary language of this piece is color and texture, layering colors to explore light and form. I use color studies to explore before I commit to a bigger piece, using it as time to be playful and experimentative. The Calf Study gives me insight into the color palette I want to use for the future piece, as well as forcing myself to work faster. I typically work on a color study for 2-4 hours, working loosely and not focusing too much on the small details.
